Why melasma and dark spots need to be distinguished

Brown patches can look similar yet require different starting points for care.

The same brown color can arise in different ways

Melasma may appear as more widespread pigment changes, while dark spots may have relatively clear borders. Brown marks remaining after acne or dermatitis may be post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Reviewing aggravating factors such as sunlight, hormonal changes, repeated friction and inflammation helps establish priorities for treatment and daily care.

Onset and changes matter more than a single photograph

Lighting and photo adjustments can alter apparent color, and a photograph alone may not show how pigment is distributed within the skin. Tell us when it appeared, whether it grew suddenly, whether it itches or bleeds and how it responded to previous lasers. Lesions with irregular borders or changing color and size may need examination and appropriate tests before cosmetic removal.

Watch the skin's response, not just the laser type

Short pulses or high intensity are not suitable for every pigment concern. The wavelength and mode should fit the lesion and skin tone, with intervals adjusted according to redness, dryness and color changes. For irritation-sensitive conditions such as melasma, repeated aggressive treatment may make pigmentation darker. If pale patches or new color changes appear, have them checked before the next session.

Plan treatment and maintenance together

Pigmentation changes can be difficult to judge after a single session and may recur depending on the cause. Reducing sun exposure and friction and treating any dermatitis are part of the process. Continue, adjust or stop based on the actual response rather than a fixed number of sessions. Maintaining stable skin without irritation is an important clinical goal alongside a clearer appearance.

Online information is a starting point for preparing for consultation. Suitable options vary with skin condition, medical history and desired changes. Decide after an examination and thorough explanation rather than assuming a particular treatment will have a certain effect.
